"Music was created by the Gandharvas (Hindu gods of fire and music) to strip the coarseness from life" - (paraphrased from The Upanishads)

With that in mind, the four song CD by the band Fifty-Four should more appropriately be titled "Music To Kill Plants By". I had to turn it off after noticing several potted plants in the general vicinity of my speakers started wilting dramatically. I do however think that this "music" (and I use the term loosely), has a potential in the pest control market. As an alternative to lethal chemicals, one could face their speakers to any wall infested with termites, turn up the Fifty-Four CD and shatter their little bodies to smithereens. I also think we could all use a break from the twisted, despondent youth themes. How can life suck so bad for someone who hasn't lived long enough to experience it? File this one in the round filing cabinet under your desk.

Band: Full Out Freak
Three song CD - No other info

From what I've heard of their three song CD, I think the Full Out Freaksters are very similar in their music and vocal style to a group I once toured with, Styx. One cut 'Little Conversations' even reminded me of Tommy Shaw's (former Styx guitarist) solo efforts. This group has some potential in the hard gum market although I think their style would have been more viable in the 70's and 80's. FOF features a good singer with some imaginative accompaniment. I think their vision would be more complete with some direction in the area of their songwriting. They have a lot to build on and with some diligence and luck, they'll find an Indy label that knows how to market in that niche.

Band: Astronaut
CD Title - Evolve

Astronaut's six song CD has many elements that take me back to several British groups of the 60's and 70's. They have some Beatle-esqe musical elements, a dash of early WHO, several of their songs seem to be cloned right off Ray Davies and the Kinks albums and certain affectations in the lead singer's voice are reminiscent of early Bowie. However, all of these elements combined fall short of these previously mentioned artists. The band does seem to have some sense of dynamics and they don't seem to be afraid to experiment. These are good things. Nothing more boring than hearing the same formulas used over and over again. I know I harp on this more than most reviewers but lyrically I just see that more work has to be done in this area in order to bring this band up to a viable comparative level with those groups they seem to be emulating.
