Lizzy - Pet of the Week

Lizzy was sick when she came to live with us in Nov. of 2004. She had already been to 3 homes, missing a toe and was living in a 55 gallon aquarium that was way too small for her. The first time we saw her she was almost 3 feet, feces all over the cage and written on the glass was the work, "*ucker". My heart broke. Lizzy was living without proper lighting, food, care, and most of all love.

She didn't like to be picked up, touched, or sometimes even looked at. I worked with her every day even though she was very scared, I had to let her know we would never hurt her. Once I earned her trust though...that was it! All my work with her paid off! She is now very friendly and potty trained. She will even come and get me when she needs to go to the bath room and will wait for me if I am not around. She takes baths in my tub, has a walk in closet for her room which is what she needs now that she's grown to over 4ft. Her door is open all day so she can come and go as she pleases. She visits with the cats in their house to look out the window. She goes to stores with us, stays on my shoulder and lets people pet her. Lizzy is just wonderful!

Her fave place is the park, we spend a good few hours there letting her walk, climb trees, and be happy. . Iquanas are wonderful to have but they are hard to take care of. I learned a lot about Iquana care by listening to many people on Iguana Den;could not have done it without them! I am still learning new things.

It's nice to have a wonderful pet like an Iguana but part of the pleasure is knowing that I rescued her from an undeserving home. Lizzy is one of the lucky ones who get a second chance for a happy and loving home and she has earned every minute of it! She was supposed to have been my boyfriends pet. Turns out she's mine, she's beautiful, and one of the most wonderful pets I have! Too many pets, not just iguanas are tossed out and easily given up. I believe that when a person gets a pet, they owe it to their pet to be part of a family not just an animal. Iguanas are wonderful creatures and deserve to be taken care of.
