Mona-moe - Pet of the Week

Mona-moe is my cat, whom I adopted from a local animal shelter in August of 2005.

When I went into the shelter, I was asking about a cat named Emma who had been featured in the area newspaper, but I learned that she had found a home earlier in the day. The man in charge told me not to let that discourage me and to please go and look at the other cats in the shelter-Mona-moe was an amazing cat right from the beginning.

She reached out of her cage and grabbed my partner's shirt sleeve as if to say "Take me home?". And we did take her home-as well as a calico (we named Rio) that Jenn had gotten attached to also. That made 5 cats and 3 humans in our apartment-definitely makes the winter nights warmer with all the kitties in the bed! I work third shift, so no one is in the bed with me when I sleep-except Mona-moe.

She literally saved my life today. I am diabetic, and sometimes my bloodsugar does funky things when I sleep. I hadn't slept in 24 hours today and I was waiting for Brian to get home because I wanted his help with putting some things up (they were too heavy for me to lift). Unfortunately, I sat on the bed for a minute, and then I was asleep-a few hours later, I awoke to Mona-moe biting the back of my head. I popped her and tried to get her to stop...But she just kept on gnawing at me!

When I finally sat up after god-only-knows how long of her biting at me, she wouldn't let me rest...She began biting at my fingers, trying in vain to make me stay awake. I got my bloodsugar monitor and checked my bloodsugar, realizing that I felt really woozy and funny and could barely sit up-my bloodsugar was 27 (Normal range is 80-120). I, of course, got something to eat and waited for my bloodsugar to come up. This isn't the first time Mona-moe has done this for me; she has woken me many times when my bloodsugar was either high or low by licking at my head-I guess this time, licking wasn't working and she had to bite.

Mona-moe thinks of us all as her kittens, I believe-she regularly bathes us, and was the first to come into the house and be accepted by the other cats when we brought her home from the shelter because she insisted on bathing all of the other cats immediately!

We "rescued" a cat outside our apartment the other day, a big orange kitty that had a hurt back leg, we later found out that he belonged to a neighbor of ours and that he had accidentally gotten outside. He had been declawed by his previous owner (he is also a shelter kitty), and that was probably the reason for the hurt place because he can't defend himself.

When we got him into the house, we brought him to Brian's bathroom and washed his wound, poured peroxide over it and rubbed some neosporin on it. The other cats sat outside the door growling and hissing, but Mona-moe wouldn't let them near Morris (we found out that Morris was his name), she popped the other cats on the head and growled right back and let them know that she was taking care of Morris!

She has been a wonderful addition to our lives-saving my life in exchange for my saving hers, I suppose and also being "mama cat" to every animal we have. Mona-moe is the perfect pet, and everyday I am more and more thankful I got her.
